Resolving BootstrapPackage Load Error: Visual Studio 2010

Issue: After fresh install of VS 2010 Ultimate I receive the following error:

  1. Searched Google to only find this issue.
  2. Notice the issue relates to the beta VS2010 not RTM which is what I am using, was marked as fixed, has no work around, and has a thread the length a mile long.
  3. Wondering why if this was fixed I am experiencing the same issue on the RTM.
  4. Run devenv.exe /log and open project that results in the error message.
  5. Open up the log in TextPad or some other text editor.
  6. Look for BootstrapPackage should yield the following XML node sequence:

  1. Examined the GAC in folder c:\Windows\Assembly looking for assembly name beginning with “Microsoft.Date.Entity*” but found nothing.
  2. Seems like I need to find the .dll and add it to the GAC.
  3. So I searched my computer for a file containing “BootstrapPackage” thinking some install bug failed to put it there – I found nothing.
  4. Searched Google again hoping to find where this dll might be hiding. I found this issue again though L. I also found this thread where no resolution is identified but plenty of people experiencing a similar issue. I found another thread were I left a nasty reply
    L
    Searched: “Microsoft.Data.Entity.Design.BootstrapPackage, Version=10.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a”
  5. Forced to take the advice of the thread where I left the nasty reply. Stay tuned.
  6. Uninstalled VS. Approximate duration: 20 min
  7. Executed the commands specified in the post:
    reg delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\AutoLoadPackages\{adfc4e66-0397-11d1-9f4e-00a0c911004f} /v {7A4E8D96-5D5B-4415-9FAB-D6DCC56F47FB} /f
    reg delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\AutoLoadPackages\{93694fa0-0397-11d1-9f4e-00a0c911004f} /v {7A4E8D96-5D5B-4415-9FAB-D6DCC56F47FB} /f
    reg delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\Packages\{7A4E8D96-5D5B-4415-9FAB-D6DCC56F47FB} /va /f

  8. Reinstalled VS: Approximate duration:20 min
  9. Tested VS by opening the project where this error was reliably visable and it appears to be resolved.
  10. So here I sit after a couple hours of Googling, reading, debugging, uninstalling, executing commands, and reinstalling I still wonder why MS allowed this bug to be released.

Thanks for that writeup, you saved me much pain when I ran into this. BTW I encountered this problem after uninstalling some packages that I no longer needed on that machine…MS Expression & Silverlight-related, IIRC. I wonder if the uninstaller (for Expression maybe?) unregistered or invalidated some settings that it shares with VS?

Tried the uninstall and reinstall of Visual Studio 2010… Still that had the damn annoying message about the Missing Assembly.

Looked on the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\ Directory which only showed:
    Microsoft.Data.Entity.Design.DLL

Installed a LOT of Windows Server 2008 files (32 Bit OS) in regards to SQL Server 2008… ADO.Net, etc… STILL didn’t solve the issue! GRRRRRRR!

So I finally fixed the issue by reading between the lines. See the details below on how I resolved this issue…

This points to the MISSING Assembly:
    Microsoft.Data.Entity.Design.BootstrapPackage, Version=10.0.0.0, Culture=neutral,
    PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/VisualStudio/10.0/Packages/{7A4E8D96-5D5B-4415-9FAB-D6DCC56F47FB}

    Renamed Key to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/VisualStudio/10.0/Packages/{7A4E8D96-5D5B-4415-9FAB-D6DCC56F47FB}-123

Problem Solved for now in Visual Studio 2010!

Hope this helps someone else resolve this issue!

well, this thing screwed me too. i uninstalled vs2012 because it is an ugly piece of crap i am boycotting (along with thousands of screaming developers)….well it showed me.

now i cant work on my projects. thanks vs2012 for wasting hours of my time.

my solution: uninstall vs2010, remove install directories and remove all registry entries for visual studio/10 from HKlocalmachine and HKcurrentuser.

microsoft’s vs2012 motto….you will have black and white and like it.

I first did what BillNew posted, which caused the “ADO.NET Entity Data Model” template went missing. Then I realized I might just reinstall Entity Framework tools. Went to add/remove programs and removed everything related to ADO.NET Entity Framework (just two items, I think). Then I went with the

    ADONETEntityFrameworkTools_enu.msi USING_EXUIH=1 /log “Log.txt”

command, after copying the MSI and the CAB file from VS2010 setup disk (DriveLetter:\WCU\EFTools). That was it.

    Hope this helps!
